What is Turn-taking?
Turn-taking is how a voice agent decides when the caller has finished speaking and when to reply. Good turn-taking avoids two failures: cutting the caller off too early, and leaving an awkward silence before answering.
Why Turn-taking matters for Telugu calling
A pause in speech is not always the end of a turn. Telugu callers may pause mid-sentence to recall a number or switch languages. If the agent replies during that pause, it interrupts them.
A detector that waits too long makes every answer late, which callers read as a slow or broken system.
How to measure or improve it
Listen for premature replies and long silences on real recordings, and adjust the end-of-speech settings based on what you hear.
- Say a long number with pauses and check the agent waits.
- Give a short answer and check the reply is prompt.
- Switch language mid-sentence and check the agent does not jump in.
