What is Barge-in?
Barge-in is the ability of a caller to interrupt a voice agent while it is speaking, and for the agent to stop and listen. Without it the caller must wait for a long answer to finish, which feels unnatural on the phone.
Why Barge-in matters for Telugu calling
People interrupt each other constantly on calls. A caller who already has the answer, or who wants to correct something, will start talking. An agent that keeps speaking over them feels rude and slow.
Barge-in also affects accuracy. If the agent keeps playing a stale sentence after the caller has spoken, the two overlap and the next turn is misheard.
How to measure or improve it
Test by interrupting on purpose, at the start, the middle and the end of an agent sentence. Check that the agent stops quickly and that pending speech is cancelled, not just paused.
- Time between the caller starting to speak and the agent going silent.
- Whether the next answer responds to what the caller said, not what the agent was saying.
- Whether background noise falsely triggers an interruption.
